Position Summary
The Behavioral Health Career Navigators work within the MSU Denver Health Institute. The Behavioral Health Career Navigators (BHCN) work with a diverse student population to prepare them for jobs in the Denver Mental health workforce. These students are seeking a degree in one of our Health Institute departments and receive training in culturally diverse patient-centered care.
This is a grant-funded position reporting to the Associate Director of the Health Institute. This project combines launching a new format of a Health Scholar program targeted to graduate students as well as coordinating internship training and placement. This position recruits, advises, provides resources, coordinates service, delivers programming, and coordinates with external partners for students majoring in mental health related fields. In addition, this position will collect and report data and track field placement for internships as well as post graduate positions.
Responsibilities
Student Support Services - 20%
- Help students develop a plan to enter the workforce through life design advising.
- Coordinate, implement, and provide services to ensure success of students enrolled in health scholars programs.
- Provide case management and develop individualized plans to meet the educational goals of students enrolled in health scholars programs.
- Prepare and disseminate information on career opportunities to incoming and current health scholar students.
- Serve as a direct liaison between external partners/organizations and health scholar students.
- Assess students' interests and abilities and match them with external opportunities, agencies, and mentors.
- Provide resources to students to increase retention and graduation rates.
- Coordinate community-building events for students.
- Provide advising on course selection, tutoring support, graduation planning, as well as graduate school planning.
- Support students from community colleges in their efforts to pursue health careers.
Recruitment - 10%
- Conduct appropriate outreach to recruit students into the health scholars programs.
- Develop relationships and work collaboratively with community organizations to facilitate student participation in internships and subsequent jobs.
- Coordinate special events and activities for health scholar students and students interested in health-related careers.
- Ensure compliance with grant guidelines through the recruitment process.
- Review and assess students' application in accordance with the criteria.
- Serve as primary point of contact for prospective students.
- Organize a yearly orientation for each cohort of students.
Program Development and implementation - 30%
- Partner with external health agencies, organizations, and businesses to create referral system and pipeline for health scholar students.
- Recruit mentors and coordinate with external partners to mentor students.
- Develop, provide support for, and attend program related and campus events
- Support academic conference presentations.
- Support internal and external stakeholder meetings.
- Provide additional support for the Health Institute as needed.
- Assist with the data collection, record keeping, and writing/program evaluation necessary to maintain grant compliance.
- Assist with the writing and renewal of Health Institute grants.
- Assist with Health Institute event planning and execution.
- Develop workshop curriculum aligned with program goals.
- Prepare workshop materials such as presentations, handouts and exercises.
- Coordinate data gathering and establishing data system for new grant
Health Institute Planning and Collaboration - 20%
- BHCN specific point projects as defined by the Health Institute director and associate director
- Contribute to curriculum development, management, and delivery for the Health Institute as a whole. This includes but is not limited to health equity lectures, workshops, and seminars.
- Help coordinate and gather data from a variety of grants to help with reporting and submitting new grants
- Point person for ensuring data integrity and security
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of Health Institute events, activities, and celebrations.
- Collaborate on grants, data, and conference proposals.
- Other duties as assigned by the associate director of the Health Institute.
Grant Oversight, Management, and Supervision - 20%
- Administer, collect, and track data from students to meet the requirements of grants
- Assist on the renewal and written requirements of the grant
- Assist in the oversight of grant budget
- Liaise and assist with Evaluator and OSRP for major grants
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
- Experience working with diverse populations including non-traditional students, students of color, first generation college students, transfer students, student from rural communities and/or veterans
- Ability to identify objectives, prioritize multiple, competing assignments, and meet deadlines with minimal or no direction and with a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail
- Skill to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to develop strong, mutually beneficial relationships
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in higher education, human services, or related field
- Demonstrated experience working in an academic or community-based setting, such as a recruiter, advisor, case manager, educational counselor, career coach, mentor, or teacher
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or currently pursuing a Master's degree in a related field such as social work, human services, counseling
- Experience with casework or case management with diverse populations
- Academic advising at the college level
- Experience recruiting mentors and matching mentees to mentor
- Developing training or workshop curriculum aimed at student success and retention
- Experience working with external partners and/or health agencies
- Experience in grant work
- Experience planning team building events
- Experience working in a health setting or with working with external partners and/or health agencies
- Experience mentoring college level students using Banner. Navigate and/or Degree Works
- Experience developing and conducting training or workshop curriculum aimed at student success and retention

Work Schedule
- Full-time, 40 hours per week
- Exempt
- Days of the Week: Monday - Friday
- Hours: 8 am - 5 pm
- Evenings and Weekend Work: Some evening work and occasional weekend work dependent upon program needs
- Schedule: Position is primarily in person, on campus with occasional remote option subject to supervisor approval
- Travel: Up to 25% of the time mostly around Denver
Salary for Announcement
Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The salary range for this position is $45,300 - $68,000. The anticipated hiring range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $52,000 - $62,000.
This position is grant-funded through August 2026. The position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
